Citizens
Group Again Raps Garbage Project (Brisbane Bee, April 22nd 1965)
Luman C. Drake, 63 Sierra Point road, has written a letter to the Corps of Army Engineers on behalf of the Brisbane Citizens for Progress protesting the proposed fill and cover dump operation east of Bayshore Freeway.
Addressed to Alf E. Ekland, the letter declared, "The day has passed when the public will tolerate live sewage in the bay, and the day is coming when it will not tolerate live garbage in the bay, or anything else in the bay for that matter."
Text of Drake's letter follows:
April 8, 1965
"This organization wishes to add its unanimous angry voice to the chorus of protest that has been going up of late over using the open waters of San Francisco bay as a garbage dump.
"We in Brisbane are the people who will have to face this operation day after day until the bay is out of sight. We have had good training. We know about and dally live with agreements reached by certain of our councilmen, with the interests of organized garbage. We see the schemes of our planning commission strewn with garbage and are counseled to be practical. We watch from the hillsides and dance when officials in San Francisco and San Mateo county periodically "approve" the use of our silver watershed as a dumpsite.
"We live in Brisbane by choice and are confident of a change. The day has passed when the public will tolerate live sewage in the bay, and the day is coming when it will not tolerate live garbage in the bay, or anything else in the bay for that matter.
"May we urge you to take a long hard look at what you are approving, therefore, and do not cooperate in the destruction of the most precious single natural asset of the bay area. The Bay. We will support your efforts and be grateful for the opportunity to be of service. May we hear from you?"
